Russell Martin fooled Rangers but he’s not fooling the fans

Well what a disaster that was, but an entirely predictable one, as Ibrox Noise saw it coming a mile off. Having already drawn with two typically cannon-fodder opponents in Dundee and Motherwell, Rangers had already shown how utterly directionless the team is under Russell Martin.

And when it came to travelling to Paisley, we knew fine well that the chances of getting a victory over there were very low. That is exactly how it turned out, another absolutely appalling performance by Martin’s side. It is safe to say that there are few to no Rangers fans now who believe he is the right man for the job.

We don’t want to say ‘we hate to tell you that we told you so’, but we kind of did. Ibrox Noise called this appointment out from the word go. We knew it was a bad shout. We are now seeing a lot of the fansites, the respected fansites and sources, basically agreeing with our assessment. But it is all too late now, because of course the season is wasted again.

This is the problem that Rangers have from the word go. By picking the wrong manager back in March, we already built the picture to his specifications, the wrong specifications. We signed his players, we created his system, and it is another bust. We knew this as soon as Martin came close to the job. We knew that this would be a wasted season, and it is why we never got behind him. Not a chance.

Why would we get behind someone with an appalling track record of a 6% win rate in the Premier League? The worst ever. His performances at MK Dons, Swansea and Southampton in the Championship were not much better. While his big claim to fame was the playoff final victory and promotion with Southampton, he only finished fourth in that division.

That is not good enough for Rangers. That is not must-win. That is, unfortunately, scraping through in fourth place. By the criteria it meant he got through to the playoff semifinals and final and won it. Fair play. That is his big life achievement.

But the chaos that Rangers are going through now could have been avoided if we had paid attention to his CV rather than paying attention to his bluster in interviews. Clearly, he pulled so much wool over so many eyes.

And now we’re paying a heavy price.
