Tottenham have not lost to Manchester United since Ange Postecoglou’s appointment
Ange Postecoglou is not resting on his laurels ahead of the Europa League final despite never losing to Manchester United as Tottenham manager.
Tottenham beat Bodo/Glimt 2-0 in Norway on Thursday as United thumped Athletic Club 4-1 at Old Trafford to set up an all-English European showpiece on May 21.
Postecoglou has faced United five times as Spurs head coach, winning on four occasions and drawing once. Three of those meetings came this campaign, with Spurs completing the league double over United either side of dumping them out of the Carabao Cup shortly after Ruben Amorim’s arrival.
Speaking after beating Athletic Club, Amorim joked that lightning probably would not strike a fourth time. Postecoglou, though, was far more pragmatic.
“I'm sure in there, there's some Portuguese humour,” he said. “There’s a little irony there. I'm sure Ruben doesn't think that way.
“We've had some good games against United this year and last year, and we have come out on top, but it's the final of a major tournament.
“I think the one thing you don't look at is previous head-to-head comparisons. They become irrelevant, it's all about who performs on the day.”
The final, which will be held at the Estadio de San Mames in Bilbao, will be the first time Spurs and United have met at a neutral venue since the 2017-18 FA Cup semi-final, posing a variety of complicating factors for Postecoglou’s preparation. Though the Spurs manager first has other priorities.
The Australian continued: “I think you treat them as a separate sort of entity. It's a unique situation, a neutral venue, like I said, it is a cup final. There's all these other things around.
“We will analyse them and their football. I think you have seen slowly an evolution, which is only understandable, in terms of how he wants the team to play. I think the players are getting a better understanding.
“We'll do our analysis, but we have two important games before that, and we will leave it until after the [Aston] Villa game.
“[Amorim] has had his own challenges this year, but credit to him, he's got his club to a European final and we are looking forward to matching up with him. “
