Manchester United earned an impressive point in a 2-2 draw at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Rival fans and the media joked at how the match could end up like a cricket result but United’s players put in a performance that their fans will be incredibly proud of.
Amorim’s side disappointed massively last time out versus Newcastle United but went toe-to-toe with their league topping rivals.
In fact, incredibly they could have won it, but Harry Maguire spooned over a late opening that would have sent United supporters into raptures.
Former United captain Roy Keane spoke before the match how United players needed to show “more passion” than they previously have done and they certainly answered his call with a number of tenacious performances.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the Irishman was complimentary of what he saw from his former side.
“Man Utd turned up. They showed a bit of passion, lot of quality and some fight. They did it at Manchester City recently as well.”
Whilst not going overboard about the performance he praised Amorim’s sides efforts by comparing them to teams of the past when he stated, “they showed what Man United’s all about but they’ve got to back it up.”
Keane did comment that the team is nowhere near out of the woods however, and they need to show this sort of performance on a consistent basis before anyone buys into the hype.
“The argument to all of this though is that you can’t just pick and choose when you want to turn up for a game at Manchester United.”
Nonetheless, he was pleasantly surprised by what he saw and commented, “I don’t think anyone would have predicted them scoring two goals today or nearly nicking it at the end. But the key is that they have to back it up.”
United will have a week of training to try and show such consistency when they travel to Arsenal in the FA Cup next Sunday.
