Jadon Sancho’s move to Chelsea, which looked inevitable at one point, is not happening, according to an update from Fabrizio Romano just now.
Jadon Sancho Tweet from Fabrizio Romano.
Sancho has been at loan at Chelsea from Manchester United all season, and had played enough games for the Blues that a £25m transfer clause was active.
However, in the end it seems the Blues have instead decided to pay the other widely reported clause – £5m to cancel that purchase option. According to Romano, the sticking point was the winger’s wages. Sancho wanted the same figures he was getting at Man U, and Chelsea stayed firm in their wage structure and denied him that.
Sancho didn’t quite win over the fans totally, and had a lot of quiet games, but he was trusted by manager Enzo Maresca and was a regular pretty much all season.
It’s a real shame for Sancho, who seemed to be really happy at Chelsea. He hadn’t had the best season, but had some good moments, capped off with a superb goal in the Conference League final. Clearly we were interested in keeping him, but not at any price.
He heads back to Manchester United, where he just adds to their headaches.
As for Chelsea, they have Estevao Willian joining the squad this summer, and they clearly think they’ve got a world class talent on their hands. Beyond that, there’s a lot of talk about adding another right footed left winger, with Jamie Gittens mentioned a lot, including by the very same Fabrizio Romano earlier today. Those rumours will only ramp up now that it’s confirmed Sancho isn’t sticking around.
The Blues have headaches of their own – Raheem Sterling and Joao Felix appear totally unwanted by Maresca, and moving them on will be an important part of this summer.
