Roma have been linked to Massimiliano Allegri and Stefano Pioli, but both are unlikely to be hired to replace Claudio Ranieri in the summer. The former Juventus boss has actually never been contacted by the Giallorossi hierarchy, Sky reports.
Instead, the ex-Milan gaffer would have to pay hefty penalties if he left Saudi Arabia less than a year after taking over Al-Nassr. The contracts in such a league make sure tacticians and players are in for the long haul.
Allegri and Pioli aren’t on the Roma shortlist, which instead comprises Gian Piero Gasperini, Patrick Vieira, Francesco Farioli, and Cesc Fabregas. Xavi was recently in town, but not for job-related reasons. He’s not an option, at least at this stage.
The Como manager is being intensely courted by Bayer Leverkusen to succeed Xabi Alonso, who’s headed to Real Madrid. He hasn’t made up his mind yet, but the interest is very concrete. He has posed his conditions for staying with the Lariani.
Perhaps not coincidentally, they are also the most expensive candidates salary-wise. Some teams don’t like going overboard with that, especially after multiple recent coaching changes. Qualifying for the Champions League would make them a more attractive destination, so it wouldn’t be surprising if more alternatives emerged if they reached that goal. Gasperini is the most accomplished but isn’t a great fit in terms of personality. Vieira isn’t stylistically, although Ranieri’s pragmatism has served them well in the last few months. Fabregas has been brilliant, but is very green and a bit extreme tactically.
