Mats Hummels hasn’t yet decided whether he’ll stay at Roma past his initial one-year contract, and his qualification-swinging gaffe against Athletic Club might have spelled the end of his stay in Italy. The Giallorossi have started earmarking defenders should they need a new one, Calciomercato informs.

Mario Hermoso is unlikely to be redeemed by Bayer Leverkusen. He recently tore his pec, ending his season early. He’ll probably be on the move again in a few months. The capital club will have to decide whether to keep Victor Nelsson, who came in on loan with a €12M option to buy.

Roma intend to go young at the position. In that sense, Noahkai Banks and Mike Marmol are their early favorite targets. They lodged a €7M bid for the Augsburg prodigy in January, as the player revealed.

“I was surprised to see how much they wanted me. Their coach made a personal effort. But my current team has a lot more in store for me.”

The Giallorossi already tracked the Spaniard in the past window too and had two meetings with his brother and agent. In the end, they elected not to activate his release clause and bring in Nelsson temporarily. He can be signed for about €10M.

Roma have also a more experienced target on their radar: Leonardo Balerdi. The early talks with Olympique Marseille suggested a €20M price tag. He recently renewed his contract.

Hummels commented on his error on the Alleine ist schwer podcast.

“I’m afraid it was the worst mistake in my career. It was horrible to stay in the locker room and hope that your teammates, who have to run more because of you, are able to do something.”
