Striker Mehdi Taremi will sign for Inter Milan from Porto as a non-EU player despite efforts to obtain Portuguese citizenship.

Today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews, report that the process of becoming an EU citizen will not be wrapped up before the Iranian signs for the Nerazzurri.

In just over two months’ time, Taremi will officially be an Inter player.

The 31-year-old is currently under contract with Porto until the end of June of this year.

But when that contract expires, the striker will be free to sign doe Inter officially.

Inter have long had an agreement in hand with Taremi – reportedly since January.

Moreover, Taremi has reportedly already undergone medicals on the move to Inter.

But it is just a matter of making it official, which will take until after the Iranian international officially ceases to be under contract with Porto.

Mehdi Taremi Will Join Inter As Non-EU Player

Once Taremi officially becomes an Inter player, he will have a place in Nerazzurri history – before he even kicks a ball in anger.

There has never been an Iranian international player to have represented the Inter shirt.

Therefore, Taremi will become the first, adding another nationality to the list to have played for the Nerazzurri.

One downside to this, however, is the fact that the 31-year-old striker will take up a non-EU spot within Inter’s squad.

That could restrict the Nerazzurri’s activity in the transfer market this summer.

Taremi had been aiming to obtain EU citizenship.

The Iranian international has been living in Europe – specifically in Portugal – since 2019. He has played for the likes of Rio Ave and then Porto in Portugal.

Therefore, the process is underway for Taremi to obtain Portuguese citizenship.

This could certainly be a boost for Inter in the coming years whilst Taremi is under contract with the club.

However, when Taremi joins at the start of July, he will not yet be an EU citizen.
