Manchester City fourth and final first-team signing of the January transfer window has arrived in the north-west of England on Tuesday evening, it can now be revealed.

The Premier League champions hit a total financial outlay north of €200 million across the winter market as they brought in two new central defenders, an attacking talent, and rounded off the window with the arrival of a new defensive midfielder.

While there had been huge praise and excitement around the arrival of Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis from RC Lens and Palmeiras respectively, and Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt, an outstanding belief was that a central midfielder must be brought in.

And such a deal was thrashed out during the final days of the January window as Manchester City turned their attentions to the signing of Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto in a €60 million switch from the Portuguese side.

Manchester City confirmed the deal upon the closure of the market for English clubs on Monday night, while it was simultaneously revealed that a four-and-a-half year deal had been penned and the number 14 shirt adopted at the Etihad Stadium.

Now, it can be revealed that having left Porto on Tuesday afternoon, Nico Gonzalez has arrived at Manchester Airport ahead of his first few days at the City Football Academy and settling into his new home.

It remains to be seen whether Manchester City will conduct any media duties with Gonzalez, having announced his transfer in relatively low-key fashion given complications around the logistics of conducting photography and producing an interview in Portugal this week.

It is understood that the former Barcelona midfielder will stay at a city centre hotel while a more permanent residence is arranged for the 23-year-old, in similar circumstances to the club’s other new signings.

Nico Gonzalez could yet make his debut for Manchester City as soon as Saturday lunchtime, when the club travels to Leyton Orient for a clash with the League One side in the fourth round of the FA Cup.
