Everton appear to have committed to covering a significant amount of Jack Grealish’s Manchester City wages throughout his loan spell on Merseyside this season.
The past few weeks brought significant progress in getting the England international forward’s move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium over the line, with Grealish officially joining David Moyes’ side on Tuesday afternoon.
The move comes off the back of a rough personal year for the 29-year-old, as he saw a significant dip in playing time under Pep Guardiola, dropping from 1,009 minutes in the 2023/24 campaign to just 721 across 2024/25.
Both of these numbers were clear steps down from where the Englishman stood during his first two seasons following his £100 million move from Aston Villa – a pair of years in which he combined for eight goals and 10 assists across 54 appearances in the top-flight.
Grealish’s exit from the Etihad Stadium seemed to be certain after the dip in playing time, as well as his exclusion from Guardiola’s squad at the FIFA World Cup. In his place, the likes of Savinho, Jeremy Doku, Claudio Echeverri, and Phil Foden travelled to the United States.
While City were looking for destinations for the Three Lions winger, one of the potential snags in various talks was his weekly wages, which sit at a reported £300,000 a week – making him the joint-fifth highest paid player by week, as per Spotrac data.
When looking for moves, Manchester City executives were looking for those wages to either be covered in full or a straight transfer out of the club, according to The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland and Gregg Evans.
“They also knew he would not come cheap, with City initially favouring either a permanent transfer or a loan with all of his wages covered,” it has been written in the report.
It appears that while the Everton board may not be paying all of the 29-year-old’s hefty wages, they will in fact be committing to a significant chunk of it, while retaining the option to sign the player in full for £50 million.
The report reveals that Everton will cover around three-quarters of Jack Grealish’s £300,000 a week salary, with City including a £50 million purchase option in the deal, which could still be negotiated should Everton want to make it permanent next summer.
The move will no doubt make Jack Grealish the Toffees’ highest-paid player by some margin, with the second-highest wage bill being his international teammate, Jordan Pickford, who makes a reported £125,000 a week.
