Manchester City striker Erling Haaland received no votes for the annual Football Writers’ Association Men’s Football of the Year award, claimed by Phil Foden.

The Manchester City midfielder became the fourth Etihad Stadium athlete in the last six years to be voted for one of the top prizes available in the English game, claiming 42 per cent of the overall vote and defeating competition from his fellow teammates and title rivals.

Foden’s top-place finish saw the Manchester City academy graduate pip Arsenal’s Declan Rice to the award, whilst Etihad Stadium teammate Rodri finished in third position, with Martin Odegaard, Ollie Watkins and Cole Palmer making up the rest of the top six.

It is also the second successive season that Manchester City’s players have won the FWA Footballer of the Year award, after Erling Haaland’s heroics across competitions last campaign saw the Norwegian win over 80 per cent of the overall vote.

However, Haaland would not come anywhere near this time, with a new report revealing the staggering outcome for the Norway international despite him registering 42 goal contributions across all competitions and leading the race for the Premier League Golden Boot.

As per the information of Jack Gaughan, writing in the latest edition of MailSport’s Man City Notebook, Erling Haaland did not receive a single nomination, with several reasons behind the Norwegian’s omission included within the report.

It is stated, according to one source, that Manchester United legend Roy Keane is one pundit who ‘contributes to a narrative’ that Erling Haaland is merely a goalscorer, as opposed to a well-rounded, talented footballer.

MailSport’s source explained, “It’s now a common story that Erling (Haaland) needs to score goals to justify his place. His best game last season was against Arsenal, the title decider. He didn’t score until the last second and his hold up play killed them.”

Erling Haaland took the opportunity to hit back at recent comments from Roy Keane after his staggering four-goal haul against Wolves in the Premier League last weekend, after the former Manchester United man claimed he had ‘League Two striker’ abilities on the ball.

Speaking after the contest, Haaland plainly admitted that he ‘does not care about that man’, in words that didn’t seem to sit right with Keane, who labelled the 23-year-old as a ‘spoilt brat’ following his substitution against Wolves that sparked an angry reaction from the forward.
