It was a difficult night for AC Milan last night as they watched city rivals Inter celebrate the Scudetto on the San Siro pitch, and it seems Stefano Pioli just wanted it all to be over with.

As La Reppublica writes today, Pioli knew how much was resting on the game to try and restore a bit of pride to Milan’s season, yet he got the starting line-up wrong and now his experience at Milan seems to be almost certainly over.

Pioli, in this long and painful final campaign of his AC Milan tenure, also seemed to be the only one to always face criticism, forced by the demands of the role, which impose the ritual of interviews after every defeat, but still always ready to respond.

This time, however, he did something new and certainly unusual: struck by obvious disappointment, he skipped the post-match press conference , limiting himself to speaking to television (DAZN) and radio (Radiorai), who are the owners of the broadcasting rights.

Here he expressed a vague intention to remain on the Rossoneri bench until his contract expires (2025), stating: “I felt before that Simone Inzaghi, 14 months ago, seemed in difficulty and then instead he did everything he did.

“I’m fine, I’m working well and I think the team has room for improvement. We need to finish the season in the best possible way, then the evaluations will be made.”

Further confirmation arrived this morning that Pioli will be sacked by Milan once the season ends, and work is currently ongoing to identify the right replacement. However, the way things are ending is not how anyone wanted.
