Friday’s reports claim that Napoli are interested in a sensational move for out-of-favour Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo following the successful signing of 2024-25 Serie A MVP Scott McTominay from the Red Devils last year.

According to reports from numerous outlets, including Sacha Tavolieri and The Mirror in the UK, claim that Napoli are actively pursuing a deal for Mainoo before the close of the summer transfer window.

Tavolieri reports that talks are underway and that Napoli are ‘very confident’ of getting a deal done, while the Mirror claims that the Partenopei have a four-year contract offer on the table ready to be signed.

There have been suggestions that the Englishman, who has been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s most recent Three Lions squad, has become frustrated by his recent lack of opportunities in the United first team, despite a slow start to the 2025-26 campaign.

Manchester United’s price tag could be an issue, however. Friday’s reports claim that Ruben Amorim’s side are seeking a fee €57.75m (£50m) for the 20-year-old midfielder.

Amorim also confirmed during his pre-match press conference on Friday that he wants to keep hold of Mainoo, despite leaving him as an unused substitute in both of the club’s first two Premier League matches of the 2025-26 campaign.

“I want Kobbie to stay. He needs to fight for his place and we need Kobbie. That is not going to change,” Amorim told the press.

Napoli have picked up several deals for former Manchester United players in recent seasons. McTominay, who was signed for a fee in the region of €30m last summer, has proved to be a roaring success at the Stadio Maradona, helping the team to their second league title in three years while claiming the division’s MVP award in the process.

The Partenopei are also closing in on the signing of former Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund from Manchester United as well, in what is expected to be a loan deal with an obligation to buy if Napoli qualify for the Champions League.
