Alejandro Garnacho has found himself at the centre of another Manchester United controversy — and this time, club chiefs are reportedly beyond frustrated. As reported by the Daily Star, Garnacho has been labelled a “misfit” by senior figures at the club following a summer incident that further alienated him from the United hierarchy.
The 20-year-old winger, who has shown flashes of brilliance on the pitch, angered management by wearing an Aston Villa shirt bearing Marcus Rashford’s name during a holiday in Ibiza. While the club has remained silent publicly, Daily Star’s Jeremy Cross revealed: “Club chiefs are seething with the stunt – and will redouble their efforts to offload the winger.”

The seeds of Garnacho’s exit appear to have been sown weeks earlier, when he fell out with new boss Ruben Amorim after being dropped from the Europa League final squad against Tottenham. The Daily Star reported Garnacho “hit out at his manager to the press,” an act that strained an already fragile relationship.
Amorim has since made it clear that he has no interest in reintegrating the winger into his plans. As such, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are pushing for a summer transfer, even if it means accepting a lower fee than Garnacho’s original £60m valuation. “United have told the Argentine sulk to find a new club,” the report claimed, making the club’s stance crystal clear.
Financially, the sale of Garnacho could prove strategic. The Daily Star highlights that any transfer would count as “pure profit” under Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) because Garnacho was a youth acquisition from Atlético Madrid in 2020. Reports suggest United may settle for offers around £45m just to get the deal done.
Interestingly, this mirrors the situation with Marcus Rashford, another academy graduate whose future at Old Trafford appears equally uncertain. The England international was on loan at Aston Villa during the latter half of last season, and United could be prepared to move him permanently if a club meets the £40m asking price.
For fans, Garnacho’s off-pitch antics increasingly overshadow his contributions on it. Wearing a rival shirt may not seem serious to outsiders, but for Manchester United, it’s a sign of deeper issues. “Controversial behaviour has made United even more determined to sell him,” wrote Daily Star — and it’s difficult to argue against that sentiment given recent events.
From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, the Garnacho situation feels like a frustrating repeat of recent years — talented youth prospects showing promise, only for off-field issues or attitude problems to derail progress. Supporters have long celebrated Garnacho’s dynamism and unpredictability on the wing, but moments like this Ibiza incident raise serious doubts about his maturity and respect for the badge.
Fans might feel betrayed. Wearing a rival’s shirt — even with Rashford’s name on it — during a summer filled with speculation about internal disharmony sends the wrong message. Many will echo the belief that Garnacho has “let himself down,” especially after being entrusted with a breakout role under Erik ten Hag just a season ago.
That said, some United supporters might wonder if the club is being too quick to cast aside another young talent. At just 20 years old, Garnacho has time to mature — and the raw potential is evident. But under the strict leadership of Ruben Amorim and amid growing financial pressures, there may simply be no room for tolerance.
The decision to cash in now may not sit well with everyone, especially if Garnacho thrives elsewhere. But in the current environment, where unity and discipline are non-negotiables, it’s understandable why United are drawing a firm line.
