As Liverpool braces for a transformative phase in their defence, rumours about Nottingham Forest’s centre-back Murillo joining the Reds have been stirring excitement. The 22-year-old Brazilian, who has quickly become a key figure for Forest, is reportedly high on Liverpool’s shortlist as they plan for a future possibly without Virgil van Dijk. Team Talk reports that Liverpool’s interest in Murillo is not isolated; Chelsea are also eyeing the young defender. Amidst ongoing speculation, Liverpool’s need for a fresh defensive lineup is a hot topic as the club contemplates life beyond Van Dijk.
With Virgil van Dijk’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, Liverpool faces an impending decision. While Van Dijk has left the door open for a potential contract renewal, he’s non-committal about his future. The towering Dutchman said, “I can say obviously [contract] discussions are ongoing, but I don’t know, we will see what happens in the future.” This air of uncertainty has led Liverpool to look for possible replacements who can fill the shoes of a defender widely regarded as one of the best readers of the game.

Liverpool’s shortlist for centre-back reinforcements includes names like Murillo, Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio, and Sevilla’s Loic Bade. Murillo, however, has reportedly “forcefully” entered the Reds’ radar as a prime target, a testament to his impressive form at Nottingham Forest.
Since joining Forest from Corinthians for £15 million in 2023, Murillo has played an instrumental role in the club’s Premier League campaign, helping them reach seventh place. His athleticism and quick interception ability have made him one of Forest’s standout players. Yet, as promising as Murillo is, filling Van Dijk’s void will be a monumental challenge. The Dutchman’s experience and game-reading abilities remain unmatched in Liverpool’s current defensive setup.
Liverpool’s priorities in the upcoming summer are clear: they need a centre-back ready to slot directly into the first team. As per Team Talk’s sources, “Liverpool’s priority next summer will be to sign a centre-back good enough to slot straight into their starting XI.” Murillo seems to fit the bill, yet he isn’t the only option. Inacio and Bade are both viable alternatives, with the latter touted as a cost-effective choice who Liverpool will monitor closely.
Adding a twist to Liverpool’s pursuit of Murillo, Chelsea is also reportedly interested. However, Chelsea’s current manager, Enzo Maresca, appears satisfied with his squad and is not planning any major additions during the January transfer window. Nonetheless, Chelsea’s stance could change by summer, especially if they identify defence as an area in need of bolstering.
According to Team Talk, Nottingham Forest has no plans to let Murillo leave in January, but a substantial offer at the end of the season might sway their position. While Forest is yet to set an official price tag, initial estimates suggest that offers between £60m and £70m could spark negotiations. Such a fee underscores Murillo’s perceived value in today’s market, reflecting both his current ability and future potential.
While Murillo remains a strong candidate, Liverpool has alternatives. Inacio, who plays for Sporting CP, has a release clause of £50.2 million in his contract, making him a slightly more affordable option than Murillo. Sevilla’s Bade also has a release clause of a similar amount, with some room for negotiation. Bade’s solid performances and relatively lower market value make him a financially appealing option for Liverpool’s backline.
Adding further intrigue to Liverpool’s transfer discussions is Trent Alexander-Arnold’s situation. Real Madrid has expressed a keen interest in the right-back, and reports suggest they’re prepared to offer him an impressive salary of £14 million to £15 million per year. With his current deal nearing its end, Liverpool will want to secure Alexander-Arnold’s future at Anfield, yet the possibility of him joining the Spanish giants remains a looming prospect.
Meanwhile, there are whispers that Liverpool may also pursue Real Madrid’s young star Arda Guler, potentially putting the Reds in a bidding war with Arsenal for the 19-year-old’s signature.
Liverpool fans are rightfully feeling concerned over the uncertainties clouding the defence. Van Dijk’s departure would leave a gap not just in skill but in leadership—something Liverpool’s backline has heavily relied upon in recent seasons. Murillo is an exciting prospect, but can he live up to the towering legacy of Van Dijk?
For many fans, Murillo might seem like a promising yet risky acquisition, especially given his limited Premier League experience. On the other hand, supporters may find comfort in Liverpool’s proactive approach, assembling a shortlist that includes high-quality defenders like Inacio and Bade. The potential arrival of a young, energetic defender such as Murillo would certainly bring a fresh dynamic to Liverpool’s backline, but it might take time for him to adapt to the intense pressures of Anfield.
As for Chelsea’s involvement, the idea of a bidding war with a rival club doesn’t sit well with many supporters. Liverpool’s defence needs stability, and the sooner the Reds secure a Van Dijk successor, the better. While the waiting game continues, fans are left speculating—and hoping—that Liverpool’s recruitment strategy delivers a defender who can live up to Anfield’s high standards.
