Relatively New Milan Coach Already Under Scrutiny

Milan defeated the odds to win the Supercoppa Italian shortly after appointing Sergio Conceiçao, but their going has been seesawing afterward. The Rossoneri have recorded three wins, two draws, and one loss in Serie A after the coaching change. They advanced in the Coppa Italia but also endured two loud defeats in the Champions League, versus Dinamo Zagreb and in the first leg with Feyenoord.

Per Corriere dello Sport, the new boss isn’t really on the hot seat yet, but the management had higher expectations when they pulled the plug on Paulo Fonseca. He and consultant Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who have fairly similar brusque characters, don’t seem to have clicked.

Conceiçao feels to have been left alone, as was the case for the previous Milan manager. The front office isn’t contemplating firing him in short order, but he’ll have to regain their trust through the results. In particular, going through in the Champions League is pivotal.

The coach’s future is in the hands of the hierarchy given a team option to extend his contract for the 2025/2026 season. Mounting a comeback and making the top four would go a long way to ensure he’ll stay.

In the meantime, the boss is ready to do away with his star-studded lineup, as it was too unbalanced against Feyenoord. He’ll add an extra midfielder and pick and choose between his forwards.

Our Take on Conceiçao and Milan

It’s normal dissatisfaction after an unexpected bad result, as it’d be foolish to change the coach after retooling the team abiding by his requests in January. Things haven’t gone great, but he deserves to be given the time to make the new squad work.
