Frederike Kempe: Bundesliga experience and expertise

28-year-old Frederike Kempe joins the BVB women from top-tier club Rasenballsport Leipzig and brings a wealth of experience with her. Kempe can look back on 78 appearances in the Bundesliga and 66 games in the second Bundesliga. In 2023, she won promotion to the first division with Leipzig. The defender had already celebrated promotion to the Bundesliga with Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2018. She previously played for FSV Gütersloh for three years. Her footballing roots lie at SSV Meschede, where she spent her youth years. “The club has clearly defined what they want to achieve with women's football and I'm very keen to help shape and follow this journey. I'm really looking forward to what will happen here over the next few years,” said Kempe.

Melanie Schuster: Experienced constant from the Bundesliga 2

Melanie Schuster is another experienced defender joining the team. “It's a huge honour to be able to play for this club. The talks with BVB went really well and after the first contact it was already clear to me what I wanted,” explained Schuster. The 28-year-old has played a total of 202 competitive matches for FSV Gütersloh since 2012, including more than 150 in the Bundesliga 2. Schuster became the mother to a daughter in 2022 and was back on the pitch just six months after giving birth. Around two months ago, she suffered a torn cruciate ligament and a torn medial meniscus in training. Schuster is currently in rehabilitation, and is expected to be out for a few more months. Once she returns, she is aiming to bolster the team with her experience and leadership qualities, not to mention her talent as a footballer.

Jenske Steenwijk: Young talent from the Netherlands

Despite her young age, the talented defender Jenske Steenwijk also joins BVB with Bundesliga experience. The 20-year-old Dutchwoman has already played in both of the top two tiers of the women's football pyramid in Germany. She began her footballing career at VV Emmen in the Netherlands before moving to SV Meppen's U17s in 2018. After making the jump to the first team, she developed into a regular player and played 62 games for the team. In the 2021/22 season, Steenwijk was part of the team that won the Bundesliga 2 with Meppen and was promoted to the top flight, where the Lower Saxons were only able to stay for one season. Steenwijk explains her choice to move to Dortmund: “In discussions with the club, I was immediately impressed by the plans for the future and the professional structures. That's why it's the right step for my personal development.”

Yasu Wöhrn: Reinforcement from Wolfsburg

Yasu Wöhrn is also set to strengthen the Black & Yellows defence. The versatile 21-year-old moves to Dortmund from VfL Wolfsburg II, with whom she made 48 appearances in the Bundesliga 2. She played in the youth set-up of SC Freiburg, before joining the Wolves in the summer of 2022. “I hope to make the best possible use of the professional structures here at Borussia Dortmund, to develop accordingly, to get better and, of course, to grow together with the team,” said Wöhrn.
