In-form Austria outclassed!

We've still got it! Thomas Letsch celebrated his first win as coach of our Red Bulls at his old stomping ground, and it could be a hugely important one. On Matchday 19 of the ADMIRAL Bundesliga, a superb collective performance took us to a 1-0 win at an in-form FK Austria Vienna side, who we are now unbeaten in 20 matches against. Oscar Gloukh scored the all-important goal in the seventh minute.

Match summary

It could not have possibly got off to a better start. In the seventh minute our Red Bulls celebrated at the Generali Arena as we took the lead! It came from a quick transition in midfield that saw Mads Bidstrup burst forward from the centre circle and send Gloukh through on goal. The two-footed Israeli did not hesitate before driving inside the far post to make it 1-0.

We had been performing well to this stage, with quick attacks that often left us in some promising situations with an overlap. We almost gained a second goal in the opening stage when Moussa Yeo just missed a cross from Bundesliga debutant Tim Trummer in the six-yard box (10'). Our momentum in the opening stage didn't last through the entire clash, as after around 15 minutes a bit of a rut developed with lots of scrappy losses of possession and short injury breaks. Some half chances came as the hosts gained much more of the play. It was great to see that we continued to thrust forward together when winning the ball while working together resolutely at the back.

Shortly before the break the tempo of the game was raised again – with big chances at either end.   Capaldo (39') could have made it two after the ball rebounded to him before Samson Baidoo reacted superbly to clear a deflected effort from distance off the line (42'). Yorbe Vertessen and Gloukh also had opportunities to net just before the interval (44').

Things continued at the same full-throttle pace after the restart. Alex Schlager had a chance to shine with a strong reflex save from a Guenouche effort (50'), before we celebrated again two minutes later. Vertessen pounced after a rebound, but was narrowly offside when Yeo hit his shot. As the game headed towards a thrilling climax with an uncertain outcome, one thing was clear - any neutral watching had their fill of entertainment this evening, with the second half particularly entertaining. The Violets kept on pushing as we remained solid, but struggled to get the ball away from the danger area with an unusually low amount of possession. When we did get breaks, we didn't make the most of them, for instance in the 75th minute when we couldn't turn a 3v1 situation into a second goal. The fascinating final few minutes saw the hosts having to sit back as we kept on threading great combination moves together and fashioned a clear advantage in terms of chances in this tight game. It remained 1-0 when the final whistle sounded and the celebrations at the great away win could start!

We don't have long to wait for the next big ADMIRAL Bundesliga clash. Next Sunday 2 March we host champions SK Sturm Graz at our Red Bull Arena – with tickets available in our Online Ticket Shop!

We started the game superbly - you saw that this is a team that wants to succeed and can perform. We were the absolute deserved winners, we should have sealed it earlier though. If you convert the kind of chances we had for a second or third goal, it could be much more relaxed. Thankfully my hair can't turn grey!

Thomas Letsch

That was one of our best team performances today! I'm pleased that we can take some important points back home. We should have scored a second goal, as that would have made it easier. The win gives us a lot of energy, and we will work hard now to be prepared for Sturm Graz!
