It has been a mystery as to why Morgan Sanson (30) has not featured at OGC Nice this season, until now at least. The Frenchman completed his move from Aston Villa to Le Gym in the summer. He played a prominent role under new manager Franck Haise in pre-season and all the indications suggested that he would start in the midfield come the start of the campaign.

However, just before the start of the season, Sanson was injured in training following a hefty challenge from a youth player. Initially, the former RC Strasbourg Alsace midfielder was diagnosed with a sprained ankle and a recovery time set of just a few weeks. But those weeks have become months and Sanson still seems no closer to returning to the pitch.

Speaking at the start of November, Haise revealed that there was still some way to go before Sanson could return, stating that his player had only just begun jogging and pool work. So why is Sanson so behind in his recovery? It comes down to a misdiagnosis of the injury, as reported by L’Équipe.

One month after the initial diagnosis of a sprained ankle, a second medical opinion was sought, which revealed that Sanson had in fact suffered two fractures in the ankle. “After three, four weeks, the diagnosis didn’t match the one initially given and the medical staff had the humility to question their initial diagnosis,” Laurent Bessiere, head of performance at Nice, told L’Équipe.

Les Aiglons hope now to have Sanson operational for the second part of the Ligue 1 season. His recovery has been much longer than the “few weeks” initially touted, however, at least there is no longer any mystery surrounding his situation.
