Championship side Queens Park Rangers dealt Plymouth Argyle a significant blow in the transfer market over the weekend by siging Rumarn Burrell from Burton Albion, who was a top target for the Pilgrims.

Argyle have already added two new strikers to their ranks this summer, with Owen Oseni and Bim Pepple heading to Home Park from St Mirren and Luton Town respectively.

However, the number nine shirt vacated by fan favourite Ryan Hardie is still available, and new boss Tom Cleverley has been transparent about his desire to fill the hole left by the Scotsman's departure.

This saw Burrell emerge as a top target for the Devon-based outfit, with Football League World exclusively revealing earlier in July that Plymouth were keen on bringing the Jamaican to Home Park.

A bid reportedly worth around £1m was launched by the Pilgrims, but was ultimately unsuccessful as Burrell was announced as a QPR player over the weekend, leaving Argyle to pursue other targets just a week before the season starts.

Following the news of Burrell's transfer to QPR, FLW spoke to their resident Plymouth fan pundit, Luke Hodge, and asked him how he felt after the Pilgrims missed out on their key target.

Luke responded: "[I'm] really disappointed to lose out on Burrell, who looked like a really exciting signing.

"It looks like we'd been in for him for a few weeks but did not get it over the line. A lot of Argyle supporters are annoyed that we think we probably should've paid the money that could've got it over the line earlier.

"However, personally I think QPR would've matched whatever. It wasn't a spur of the moment signing for QPR, they would've had their eyes on him.

"When it comes down to a decision between League One Plymouth Argyle or Championship QPR, if he's got ambitions he was always going to go the way of the Championship club.

"We have to move on, disappointed, but we need to get someone through the door sooner rather than later. The season is less than a week away, and we're crying out for a striker that knows where the net is.

"Fingers crossed that the Dale Taylor rumours are true, and we can get that one over the line. If not, the search will continue until the club can get a number nine through the door," Luke concluded.

As Luke alluded to in the final part of his interview, Argyle have recently emerged as one of the two clubs battling to sign Nottingham Forest striker Dale Taylor, along with League One rivals Blackpool.

The 21-year-old has plenty of experience in the third-tier, having been named Wigan Athletic's Player of the Season last campaign, and has previously spent time on loan with both Burton and Wycombe Wanderers.

Reports from Alan Nixon on Sunday morning suggested that Plymouth and Blackpool would be battling it out to sign the striker, with PlymouthLive later revealing that a permanent deal is being explored.

It seems like developments are moving quickly, and after the disappointment of missing out on Burrell, the Green Army have some hope to cling on to about having a new number nine ahead of Saturday's fixture against Barnsley.
