A 0-3 defeat in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League knockout tie is something unheard of for Real Madrid who are always at their best in the European event.

This time around, however, they struggled endlessly against Arsenal in the quarter-final first leg and were totally embarrassed in London.

Speaking to the media after the game, the Real Madrid players made it very clear that they were not backing down after the heavy defeat and that they would come back stronger at the Santiago Bernabeu to eliminate Arsenal.

Determination at an all-time high

As relayed in a recent update by El Chiringuito, Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappe, Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham met and spoke in the dressing room immediately after the defeat to Arsenal to reflect on the result.

The topic of discussion was obvious – mounting a comeback at Santiago Bernabeu to undo the mistakes that they made earlier this week.

The quartet, after all, form the core of Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid and will all have to be at their best if Real Madrid are to stand any chance of pulling off the unthinkable.

Mbappe failed to bury his few chances in the first leg, and knowing how monumental those missed chances eventually proved to be, he will be eager to fire Los Blancos into a winning position next week.

Vinicius, meanwhile, was simply invisible and horrendous in the first leg and will look to redeem himself in the second instalment.

Valverde and Bellingham were decent midweek but will have to further step up if Real Madrid are to dominate Liverpool’s midfield and take the game by its scruff.

The game against Arsenal next week will not only define Real Madrid’s season but possibly Ancelotti’s future and that of several players in the squad. A lot rides on it and it remains to be seen if they can pull off the unthinkable.
