Real Madrid ended a season to forget, suffering a heavy 4-0 defeat to PSG in their last match in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Young defender Raul Asencio, in particular, was singled out for criticism after the game for a mistake that led to the Parisians’ opening goal.
It was not his only costly error – he had made his debut in the Club World Cup by conceding a penalty against Al-Hilal. In the following match against Pachuca, he received a red card in the opening minutes after a major mistake.
Following the end to his disastrous run at the FIFA Club World Cup, Asencio has taken to social media to issue an apology to Real Madrid fans.
“Madridistas, a season in which I fulfilled my dream of being part of the best club in the world is coming to an end, but it ended in the way I least expected,” wrote Asencio.

“I feel like I didn’t live up to my expectations in a Club World Cup that demanded the utmost, but now it’s time to disconnect and recharge my batteries.
Concluding, he wrote: “I wish you a happy holiday and now and always, HALA MADRID! Counting down the days until I return to the Bernabeu.”
Having had his breakthrough in the 2024/25 season due to a spate of injuries in defence, Asencio made the most of his chances and became a part of the first-team setup.
But the performances at the Club World Cup have raised question marks about whether the young Spaniard has the level required to perform consistently for Real Madrid.
