Florian Wirtz has long been a target for Real Madrid, with the Spanish capital giants having been tracking the Bayer Leverkusen target for some time now.

With Xabi Alonso set to take over the reins as the new Real Madrid manager next week, the rumours of interest in Wirtz further intensified in recent times.

After all, Real Madrid are said to be targeting a Galactico signing in the summer and Wirtz’s quality and limitless potential made him a potential candidate.

Florian Wirtz headed to Liverpool

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have now emerged as the favourites to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

The German attacking midfielder seemed to be headed to Bayern Munich not so long ago but has seemingly had a change of heart and is now bound for England.

Indeed, as per Romano, Wirtz has given Liverpool the initial green light, following which the new Premier League champions have already made a formal approach to Leverkusen to secure a deal.

Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen are now involved in talks to reach an agreement over a transfer fee and the total package for the German international.

The Reds have moved swiftly so as to avoid a long-drawn saga and any potential surprises down the line.

With this, Real Madrid have now been dealt a big setback as far as any hopes of signing Wirtz were concerned.

Given that the youngster is believed to have given the go-ahead to Liverpool from his side, the deal is likely to go through in the coming days unless the two clubs are unable to reach an agreement.
