In a season wrought by injuries, inconsistency and mediocrity, the performances of Kylian Mbappe was a rare positive for Real Madrid.
The Frenchman ended the campaign as the league’s top goalscorer and even secured the Golden Boot, ahead of stars such as Viktor Gyokeres and Mohamed Salah.
Currently plying his trade for the French national team, Mbappe was recently asked about his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or.
In a recent interaction with RMC Sport, Mbappe admitted that winning the Ballon d’Or is not in his hands.
The Frenchman implied the rather cynical nature of the trophy’s selection process by pointing out that his performances cannot dictate whether or not he can win the prize.

“Am I a contender for the Ballon d’Or? I have my opinion, but it doesn’t count for much,” Mbappe said.
“The only award I can influence is the Golden Boot, because that depends on my feet. The Ballon d’Or doesn’t depend on me,” he added.
Despite ending the campaign with the Golden Boot award, Mbappe is not among the top candidates to win the Ballon d’Or title.
Those labels go to Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and PSG’s Ousmane Dembele, who may be the front-runner after winning the UEFA Champions League. Mbappe, however, has endorsed Dembele to win the prize.
Cristiano Ronaldo recently caused quite the stir by stating that a Ballon d’Or winner must win the UCL, which was met by rebuttal from Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery.
But the bottom line is, no Real Madrid player will be considered for the Ballon d’Or this year, although it is unlikely that the club will be interested in sending a player after last year’s fiasco.
