A headline member of the midfield ranks at La Liga giants Real Madrid has this week been forced into a withdrawal from international duty.
That’s according to Marca, who point towards Federico Valverde as the player in question.
Valverde for his part spent much of the latter portion of the recently-completed campaign struggling for fitness.
This came owing to what was later revealed by Real Madrid to be a case of lumbosciatica, ‘a musculoskeletal problem arising from the inflammation of the sciatic nerve’.
And Valverde, evidently, has since not recovered sufficiently for competitive action.
The 26-year-old was afforded a call-up to the Uruguayan national team squad for upcoming World Cup qualifying fixtures against Paraguay and Venezuela.
As per a report from Marca, however, Valverde will play no part in either outing:
‘His back pain hasn’t completely subsided, and the decision, according to Uruguayan sources, is for Valverde to stay in Madrid to try to recover from his back problems and be able to compete in the Club World Cup.’
