Real Madrid are always on the lookout for young talents who can strengthen their squad while also fitting into the club’s long-term vision and their latest target, according to reports from SPORT, is Olympique Lyon’s Rayan Cherki.

The 21-year-old French midfielder is seen as a strong alternative if the club fails to secure the signing of Martin Zubimendi in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Zubimendi has been on Real Madrid’s radar for a while. However, there are multiple reasons why his signing may not be ideal for Los Blancos.

Problems in signing Zubimendi

One of the biggest hurdles is the financial aspect of the deal. His release clause is set at €60 million, a figure that Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United are willing to meet without hesitation.

This means that Real Madrid would need to engage in a bidding war, something they usually prefer to avoid unless they are fully convinced about the player’s necessity in the squad.

Beyond the financial concerns, there is also a tactical issue. Zubimendi primarily operates as a defensive midfielder, a role that is already well-covered at Real Madrid.

With Aurelien Tchouameni, Eduardo Camavinga, and Federico Valverde forming a solid foundation in midfield, adding another player with a similar profile would not bring much variation to the squad.

Cherki – A good alternative

This is where Cherki comes into the picture. The Lyon playmaker is known for his attacking qualities, versatility, and technical ability.

He is capable of playing as an advanced midfielder and is equally effective with both feet, making him a valuable asset for any team looking to add creativity to their midfield.

Cherki is currently under contract with Lyon until 2026, and while his market value is estimated at around €30 million, his actual transfer fee could be significantly higher due to interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Real Madrid believe that he fits their vision perfectly. Not only is he young and highly talented, but he would also be joining a growing French contingent at the club.

His arrival could further strengthen the chemistry within the squad while giving Madrid an additional creative option in midfield.
