After a season marked by injuries and uncertainty at the back, Real Madrid have made defensive reinforcement a top priority for the upcoming summer transfer window.
Despite originally focusing on bolstering the midfield and left-back areas, recent concerns surrounding key defenders have forced a rethink at Valdebebas.
According to Jorge Picon, the club are now actively searching for a centre-back who fits a very specific profile.
They are looking for someone young, affordable, and versatile enough to cover multiple positions if needed. The idea is to sign someone who can slot into the rotation immediately and help stabilise a backline weakened by recent events.
David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger are both dealing with serious physical issues and their long-term reliability is in question.

Alaba’s high salary is another concern, with the club hoping to move him on to ease wage pressure. Rudiger, whose knee problems are worse than expected, also plans to see out his deal until 2026.
While Eder Militao is expected to return gradually and academy product Raul Asencio is showing promise, the club believe competition is needed to re-energise the group. No defender currently holds a guaranteed starting spot.
Despite links to numerous players, Madrid’s shortlist is actually very selective. William Saliba and Ibrahima Konate are both admired, but acquiring the services of both players could be difficult.
Saliba is expected to cost a fortune, with Arsenal determined to keep hold of his services while Real Madrid aren’t too keen on signing Konate before 2026.
Dean Huijsen is another name being discussed internally, though Bournemouth’s €58 million release clause makes him a costly option. Castello Lukeba and Jonathan Tah are also under watch.
