With a summer of major squad changes looming at Real Madrid, the club has been casting a wide net in search of defensive reinforcements. One of the names consistently linked to Santiago Bernabeu is RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba.

However, according to Defensa Central, the Frenchman’s arrival is looking increasingly unlikely, as Real Madrid baulk at the reported €50–55 million price tag.

President Florentino Perez has not ruled out strengthening the backline this summer, especially given the ongoing injury issues and inconsistent performances within the squad.

Still, the club is not willing to pay a premium for what they view as a second-choice option.

Despite Lukeba’s reputation and the fact that he remains highly rated by key figures, Madrid have made it clear that only a select few defenders warrant such an investment, and at this stage, Arsenal’s William Saliba remains their priority.

A good-enough signing, but at what cost?

Lukeba, under contract with Leipzig until 2029, has impressed with his composure, strength, and ball-playing ability. Naturally left-footed and still just 22 years old, he fits the mould of a modern Madrid defender.

Yet, while his performances have drawn admiration in Madrid’s inner circles, club decision-makers feel that Leipzig’s valuation is too steep for a player they do not consider a guaranteed starter.

Real Madrid have been following Lukeba closely for months, with scouts regularly tracking his development in the Bundesliga.

His trajectory suggests that a big move is on the horizon, and Leipzig are reportedly open to letting him go, provided the asking price is met.

But unless there is a significant drop in that valuation, Lukeba will likely not be heading to the Spanish capital.

Lukeba may still be on Madrid’s radar, but only as a fallback. The club sees Saliba as the ‘Galactico’ of their defensive wishlist, and it would take a significant shift in Leipzig’s stance for Lukeba to become more than just a backup plan.
