FLW's QPR fan pundit has given his verdict on Kwame Poku's injury setback
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Kwame Poku is set to be absent until after the September international break after suffering a hamstring injury.
Julien Stéphan has confirmed that the forward is set to miss the next few games after coming off 66 minutes into his debut for the club.
He started the team’s 1-1 draw against Preston North End during the opening weekend of the new season, his first appearance since joining from Peterborough United.
There was a lot of fanfare surrounding his arrival given his level of performances in League One with the Posh, joining as a free agent after the forward’s contract expired.
When asked about Poku’s injury, FLW’s QPR fan pundit Louis Moir expressed his frustration with the setback, but also claimed he’s happy that it’s not worse than it is.
He’s not too concerned even though the 24-year-old has a record of suffering a hamstring injury in his past, and that the team can handle missing him for a few weeks as long as it doesn’t become a recurring problem.
“Obviously it’s not ideal news, I think we all sensed it was somewhat of a serious injury,” Moir told Football League World.
“It’s very frustrating for that to happen after just one league game, he was playing well, he was going to be such a big player for us and he was a massive signing.
“It could be worse, he could be out a lot longer than what he is.
“I think yes, he’s going to be missed until he’s back but we’ve still not got everyone fit, we’re waiting on how we can make this team consistent and give the manager an easy job to pick the majority of the same starting XI for most games.
“And I think that’s yet to come, and we’re probably going to see that after the international break.
“Obviously, it’s not good news, but I wouldn’t really say I’m concerned because he’s a player that’s played a lot of games for his age in League One, Championship, tough leagues.
“I know he’s suffered a bit similar injury at Peterborough, and due to his play-style, with him being an explosive, attacking winger, it could happen again but fingers crossed it doesn’t.
“But we’ve just got to hope he comes back, and not just him but the other players come back and stay fit for as long as they can.
“We’re missing quality and we’re obviously missing Poku for a few weeks at the very least.
“So, not ideal, but at least we’ve got players that can slot into his position and it’ll allow us to change up the front three behind the striker.
“Not ideal news, but fingers crossed he can recover very quickly, because obviously I’m very excited, and every fan is, for what he can do this season."
QPR have drawn one and lost one so far in the league under Stéphan, with a clash against Coventry City up next on 23 August in a 3pm kick-off.
QPR chased Poku and got that deal done on the basis that he’d be a key part of the team this season, and now he’s out of action after 66 minutes.
It’s far from ideal, but at least he won’t miss too many games with this issue because of the international break.
As long as he remains fit beyond this period, this could easily all be forgotten at the end of the campaign.
