Barry Ferguson believes that Jack Butland has the personality and intensity to lead Rangers and insists that being Gers skipper, as James Tavernier is, does not guarantee a spot in the side.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement dropped Gers captain Tavernier from the starting line-up in some of the Gers’ recent games.

Ferguson stressed that Clement is not disrespecting the Rangers skipper’s position by handing it to Butland and he believes that the goalkeeper has the right personality and intensity necessary to be the Rangers captain.

He also stressed that being the captain of Rangers does not make Tavernier immune to being dropped from the starting line-up and he also pointed out that Connor Barron could someday wear the Gers captain’s armband if he continues to play like the way he is.

“Clement isn’t disrespecting the armband by handing it around to anyone who fancies having a go”, Ferguson wrote in his Daily Record column.

“On the contrary, he has selected Jack Butland as the man to step up if or when Tavernier isn’t in the team.

“And Butland has the personality and the intensity required to fill that mantle.

“I look at John Souttar as another who could fill the role if required.

“Maybe young Connor Barron could be a future Rangers captain if he continues to grow into the jersey.

“But Clement is not flinging it around willy-nilly.

“Yes, he may be dipping Tavernier in and out of his team but he can only pick 11 players at any one time.

“If Tavernier isn’t one of them then someone else has to lead the team.

“You can’t expect to be bombproof just because you happen to be the skipper.”

Former players and a section of the Rangers fan base have criticised Tavernier for his performances this season and it remains to be seen whether the defender will be able to win them back by improving in the coming weeks.
