If a recent report from Africafoot is believed to be true, Rangers have approached former Southampton winger Moussa Djenepo ahead of a potential summer transfer. But they are not alone in the race with Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv and the newly-promoted Premier League outfit Leeds United also chasing the Standard Liege star, who is enjoying a season-long loan stint in Turkey with Antalyaspor.

Meanwhile, Leeds are ready to trigger his £1.7m clause, which makes the situation a bit weird and interesting for the Gers. They are in takeover talks with 49ers Enterprises, who also own the Whites. This could lead to a conflict of interest for the owners, unless the move materialises before the American acquisition.

The 26-year-old Mali international progressed through the academy ranks of Yeelen Olympique back in his homeland. He then completed a minuscule €50k transfer to Belgian heavyweights Standard Liege after an initial loan.

There, he flourished with first-team opportunities, thus earning a coveted Premier League transfer two years later. Southampton splashed £14m to secure his services, but he only made 73 top-flight appearances over the next four seasons before the Saints got relegated.

After failing to make the most of his opportunities in England, Djenepo returned to Standard for £3m in 2023. However, he netted only once last season in 28 Belgian Pro League outings, and the Rouches loaned him out to Antalyaspor back in the summer window. So far, the Malian has scored two and laid on one more in 22 Super Lig games while featuring from the left-hand flank.

Why Rangers Are Chasing Djenepo

Although his numbers are far from impressive, the right-footed forward slots in well as an inverted winger. He offers great pace, swift footwork, cut-insides and dribbling traits, but a little improvement in terms of finishing, passing, and decision-making could see him fulfil his potential and boost stats with more goals and assists.

It has been a season to forget for Rangers, who will finish the campaign without silverware. Nedim Bajrami and Ianis Hagi had their moments, but they lacked consistency down the left, unlike Abdallah Sima. The Brighton loanee was exquisite last season; however, the Gers failed to retain his services despite making signing attempts. Oscar Cortes has hardly featured amid persistent injury problems.

The Light Blues do not have a permanent manager but would welcome Kevin Thelwell as their sporting director upon the expiry of his Everton contract. The Englishman should decide whether to make Barry Ferguson’s role permanent as the Ibrox boss (which is unlikely). Also, a decision on Djenepo should only be made under his supervision.
