Rangers fans have rarely been as apathetic about a managerial and ownership change as they are right now. In most eras a new manager brings with him a wave of excitement hope and anticipation. But with Russell Martin the feeling is best described as flat. The decision to appoint a coach with limited top level experience and a distinctly underwhelming track record has failed to inspire the Ibrox faithful. Even among the more optimistic supporters there is a strong sense of hesitation rather than belief.
From the moment Martin was announced the energy among the fanbase has been subdued. There have been no widespread welcomes no social media explosions of joy and certainly no talk of a revolution. Instead what followed was resignation. This was not the bold move the support had hoped for but another safe predictable appointment with more questions than answers. Martin’s previous work with Swansea and Southampton showed some attacking promise but also a worrying inconsistency. His lack of silverware and inability to build defensively strong sides is a major red flag.
Then there is the new ownership. The much hyped changes at boardroom level were supposed to signal a new era at Ibrox yet there is a distinct lack of clarity over the direction of the club. Supporters have not been convinced by the promises of ambition and rebuilding. Actions speak louder than words and so far the actions have been timid. This article points to Martin’s early decisions including backing James Tavernier as captain as an early misstep. It smacks of more of the same rather than brave leadership.
The club is currently crying out for inspiration but instead it feels like the same tired formula is being repeated. A look at Martin’s unveiling and subsequent interviews shows a man trying to say the right things but not quite connecting with the reality on the ground. Rangers fans have seen this film before and they know how it ends.
Even the wider football press is aware of the scepticism. As reported here there is an uphill battle to win over a deeply unconvinced support. That battle has yet to begin and already it looks like the spark may never catch.
