Rangers’ board are set to wind the supporters up again by shortchanging the club on striker Sam Lammers – but with a caveat

The 27-year-old Rangers failure will never be back at Ibrox in anger again, and having done very well at Eredivisie side Utrecht, is now in major demand with Dutch top-flight clubs, FC Twente now taking interest in his signature on top of AZ Alkmaar.

All three are vying for his services on a permanent basis, but we understand Rangers’ bosses are content to write him off for £2M just to get him off the books.

There is, however, a major caveat to this, an explanation why.

Rangers are desperate to get Lammers off the roster permanently, but his £22,000pw wages are much, much higher than any of those suitor clubs’ salary structure allows. Most of them have a top earner around £12,000, unless they have a player on loan from a bigger club.

Ergo, none of the three clubs interested in Lammers can afford his wages as things stand, and by reducing his asking price, Rangers are giving those clubs the chance to afford his wages and get him off the books at Ibrox for good.

In short, they spend a bit less up front, and can then afford his wage expectation with ‘what they saved’.

His market value? He’s around £4.5M now, thanks to his performances in Holland.

Rangers spent £3M on him, and with his renaissance in Holland he’s risen to notably above that, not quite the £8M he gifted PSV back in the day, but more than Rangers paid.

But to offload him permanently means someone has to take on his wages, and Dutch clubs aside Ajax, Feyenoord (barely) and PSV themselves can’t afford those, unless they are able to get a valuable player worth more, for less, and use the ‘saving’ on his salary. There will also be addons and sell on as well, likely based on goals, appearances and a healthy chunk of a future sale.

This is why Rangers are willing to write off his fee, and accept a bit less.

Because his £1.5M a year wages (which run till 2027 meaning £4.5M further)) are a drain on Rangers’ resources for no return. We want him departed.
