Rangers and Birmingham hit deadlock on Ben Davies

The Ben Davies transfer has run into trouble as Rangers and Birmingham City stall on concluding the deal. Ben Davies transfer from Rangers to Birmingham has stalled. Both clubs had reached a general agreement weeks ago, and the move looked close to completion, but talks have dragged on. Rangers expected Davies to leave Ibrox permanently, while Birmingham showed early interest in a (further) loan deal with an option to buy. Now there is confusion over the structure, terms and timeline of the transfer. One recent report broke down the growing uncertainty around this long-winded saga.

Rangers signed Ben Davies in 2022 for around £4M from Liverpool, and the club hoped to recoup some of that fee this summer. With only a year left on his deal, Davies has dropped down the pecking order under manager Russell Martin. Ibrox chiefs viewed his exit as a financial and footballing necessity, especially after bringing in new defensive signings like Max Aarons and Nasser Djiga. The idea was to trim the wage bill and reduce the surplus of centre-backs ahead of the new campaign. Concerns over the volume of arrivals have only added fuel to the Davies situation.

Birmingham seemed ready to take him off Rangers’ hands, but negotiations have grown complicated. One issue appears to be the fee and wages – Brum offered only £700,000 while Davies doesn’t want to lose his £30Kpw wage. That does not suit Rangers, who aim to move Davies on entirely rather than park him elsewhere. The defender earns a decent wage and the club would rather not carry part of that burden for another season. Details emerged recently suggesting Rangers want to break even on his exit.

Davies remains professional and continues to train with the squad, but uncertainty over his future helps no one. He has not featured prominently in preseason and looks unlikely to start any matches. Martin has other options he clearly prefers, and Davies needs a fresh challenge to revive his form and match sharpness. A player of his pedigree would benefit from regular minutes, something he will not find at Ibrox. The club’s official stance indicates an intention to find clarity on this front soon.

Rangers fans grow increasingly frustrated with the lack of movement. They know Davies no longer fits the plans and wonder why the deal drags on. Birmingham supporters also question the club’s hesitation, especially when they require reinforcements at the back. It feels like both clubs want the move but cannot settle on terms.

For Rangers, the delay disrupts their squad planning and financial clarity. In Davies’ corner, it means limbo. For Birmingham, it prolongs a decision that could strengthen their squad. The longer talks stall, the more complicated the situation becomes. Rangers must push for resolution soon, or risk holding a player they no longer need.
