One of the most worrying moments from Real Madrid’s Club World Cup match against Pachuca came right at the final whistle, as a heated clash unfolded between Antonio Rudiger and Gustavo Cabral.
The German defender, who recently returned from a long-term injury, was visibly upset after an exchange with the Argentine player. This incident quickly drew attention for all the wrong reasons.
As tensions flared, the referee had to step in to separate the players. Rudiger continued demanding an explanation from Cabral, appearing furious about something said during the match.
The referee made the gesture recognised under FIFA’s anti-racism protocol, crossing his arms, signalling a possible racist incident, which now demands further investigation.
After the match, Rudiger reportedly sought out Cabral again in the tunnel, where teammates and staff had to intervene to prevent things from escalating further.
Inside the dressing room, the German defender is said to have explained what took place, prompting immediate support from the club and manager Xabi Alonso.
Speaking to the press, Alonso confirmed that an internal review has already begun and that Real Madrid are standing firmly behind their player.
“We support Antonio because we believe him. FIFA’s protocol is now active and an investigation will follow. If what he said is true, the necessary steps must be taken,” Alonso said. “There’s no place for racism. It’s unacceptable, and we won’t tolerate it.”
As of now, FIFA has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident. However, one is expected soon, especially given the seriousness of the matter and the visibility of the match.
Real Madrid and their supporters are now awaiting further developments, standing behind Rudiger as the investigation unfolds.
