QPR are keeping tabs on Norrington-Davies ahead of the 1 September transfer deadline
QPR are interested in a move for Rhys Norrington-Davies from Sheffield United ahead of the 1 September deadline.
According to The Star, the Hoops see the centre-back as an option to bolster Julien Stéphan’s first team squad.
Norrington-Davies started for Ruben Selles’ first competitive game in charge at Bramall Lane, but was hooked after just 56 minutes.
Sheffield United found themselves down 4-1 by the time he was substituted, which was ultimately the final score of the team’s opening game of the new campaign.
QPR are keeping tabs on Norrington-Davies ahead of the last couple of weeks of the summer transfer window.
The centre-back featured over Jack Robinson on Saturday, who has himself been the subject of transfer speculation this month.
Selles denied that the uncertainty around Robinson’s future kept him out of the side, insisting that Norrington-Davies was selected instead due to his work in pre-season.
“Jack Robinson didn't play in the last couple of pre-season matches and Rhys has done a good job, so that was why he started,” said the Spaniard, via The Star.
“Robbo only joined us in the last couple of training sessions and I decided to go with Rhys in that position because he has done a good job."
However, QPR are now eyeing a possible deal for Norrington-Davies, who signed a new long-term deal with the Blades 12 months ago.
The 26-year-old has a contract with the Yorkshire outfit until the summer of 2027.
Norrington-Davies has been with Sheffield United from underage level, coming through the academy to break into the first team squad.
The defender has been a prominent part of the side for the last four seasons, although he has struggled for consistent game time.
The Wales international has made 57 league appearances for the club, including his start against the Robins last weekend.
However, he started just two of his 14 games in the Championship last year under Chris Wilder.
If Sheffield United sell both Robinson and Norrington-Davies then they will surely need to go back into the market to find replacements.
While they have cover at full-back on both wings, Robinson and Tyler Bindon are their only recognised centre-backs, with Norrington-Davies featuring in that role on Saturday.
A move to QPR would likely offer the 26-year-old greater game time than if he stayed in Selles’ side beyond 1 September.
However, Sheffield United will need to be wary of leaving themselves too short in a key part of the squad, especially if they want to push for promotion again this season.
