Julien Stephan’s side have started the 2025/26 campaign in deflating fashion, winning just one of their opening four league games as well as crashing out of the EFL Cup at the hands of Plymouth Argyle.

Included in these defeats was a 7-1 battering by Coventry City, which may have forced QPR into the market for more defensive reinforcements before the window slams shut.

QPR have added nine players to their ranks this summer, with a strong focus on offensive recruits such as Koki Saito, Richard Kone and Kwame Poku.

However, Stephan is looking to bolster his defence on deadline day with a move for Edwards.

According to West London Sport, the Rs are aiming to strike a deal with Southampton to bring the 22-year-old back to Loftus Road.

The centre-back spent the second half of last season on loan with Rangers, making 21 league appearances and impressing greatly during his time with the club.

Edwards is keen on making the move, despite featuring four times for Southampton during the early stages of the 2025/26 campaign.

QPR saw a bid rejected for the defender’s services earlier in the summer, but negotiations have continued, with another loan deal a possibility.

It was reported by Alfie House via X that the Saints’ position was that they weren’t looking to cash in on the centre-half, but that hasn’t stopped Stephan and Co. pursuing a deal.

Edwards signed for Southampton for £3 million from Peterborough United in 2024 but struggled to establish himself at St. Mary’s and was ultimately loaned out to QPR in January.

At 22 years of age, the defender still has a great amount of room to develop into which may be why Will Still isn’t eager to let him exit the club.

As the window approaches its final hours, QPR are still trying to strike an agreement with Southampton for Edwards’ services.

However, the Saints have been firm in their stance of not wanting to sell the defender and if they stick to that, it could leave the Rs empty-handed.

Although the 22-year-old impressed at Loftus Road last season, Stephan and Co. may have been better suited to pursue other targets once it became clear that Edwards wasn’t up for sale.

Ultimately, missing out on a new centre-back will hurt QPR immensely across 46 games and they could’ve prevented that pain by moving away from Edwards earlier in the summer.
