According to journalist Flavien Trésarrieu, Julien Stéphan has closed the door on a possible sale of the 23-year-old.

Varane joined QPR last summer from Sporting Gijon, helping the team finish 15th in the Championship table with 39 appearances.

The midfielder has started two of the London outfit’s league games for this campaign, including one start, with the market set to close at 7pm on Monday.

QPR have turned down a loan offer from Saint-Étienne for Varane that included a €5 (£4.3) million option to buy.

It is understood that Stéphan has made it clear that the player will not be going anywhere with so little time left in the window.

The Championship side are reportedly keen to keep the midfielder beyond Monday’s deadline despite the prospect of a major profit on the fee paid to purchase him 12 months ago.

It was reported in 2024 that QPR agreed an £875,000 fee with Sporting Gijon to bring him to Loftus Road.

Varane immediately cemented himself as a key part of the team under Martí Cifuentes’ side, playing consistently in the league last season.

He is now set to remain part of QPR’s plans for the remainder of the campaign, with the club rejecting a loan with an option to buy.

QPR’s start to the season

Stéphan arrived as manager over the summer, and oversaw the arrivals of a number of players, including Koki Saito, Richard Kone, Karamoko Dembele, Rumarn Burrell and Kealey Adamson, who all joined for major fees.

Kwame Poku, Amadou Salif Mbengue and Isaac Hayden signed as free agents, while a loan deal was agreed for Rhys Norrington-Davies.

But it’s been a poor start to the new campaign under Stéphan, with the Hoops earning one point from their opening three games, which also includes a 7-1 loss to Coventry City.

Next up for QPR is a home clash against Charlton Athletic on 30 August in a 12.30pm kick-off.

Jonathan Varane still has a role at QPR

Varane has played in two of QPR’s opening three games, so he clearly still has a big role in the team under Stéphan.

The offer of £4.3 million is a major profit on the fee paid to sign him, but because it’s only an option to buy clause it may never end up being triggered.

With so little time left in the market, the club are perhaps better off taking their chances and keeping him.
