Pundit refuses to blame Man United for Antony’s poor form in the Premier League | OneFootball

Brazilian winger Antony has had a blistering start on loan at Real Betis, scoring three goals in his last three games for the club.

The 24-year-old looked short of confidence before leaving United last month, netting just once in 14 games across all competitions.

The Brazilian’s form has led to some suggestions that United did not provide him with the right environment to thrive in the English top flight.

However, pundit Mario Melchiot believes Antony’s struggles in the Premier League were self-inflicted.

He told ESPN FC: “I think Antony took the Premier League like the Eredivisie and should have taken it out of his head.

“If he had taken it out of his head, he would have been way better off, but because of what he is doing now in Spain, scoring goals, and being really comfortable, you cannot say that.

“You could see he could not handle the pressure coming towards him, and that is why he looked like a player that was not ready for the Premier League.”

Antony’s form with Betis could help Man United’s summer plans

Despite his form for Betis, he is unlikely to play for United again as he does not suit manager Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

Man United will hope the left-footed winger can maintain his form with Betis, as that will make it easy to dispose of him this summer.

The Red Devils are unlikely to recoup the £86 million they paid Ajax for him in 2022, but his transfer fee can be reinvested in the squad.

His permanent departure will also reduce the club’s wage bill and help to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
