Earlier today, Barcelona found out their opponents for the league phase of the UEFA Champions League this season, and they have drawn up some big names.

While most of the draw is relatively straightforward for the Catalans, they notably play the defending UCL champions PSG and the defending FIFA Club World Cup champions Chelsea in the league stage, making it an interesting schedule for them.

In addition to PSG and Chelsea, the Blaugrana have also drawn Club Brugge, Eintracht Frankfurt, Olympiacos, Slavia Praha, Newcastle United and FC Copenhagen.

PSG president’s verdict

Speaking to the media after the Champions League draw, Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was asked his thoughts on drawing Barcelona in the competition and what he looked forward to in the game.

He admitted that it would be an exhilarating matchup between two of the best teams in world football at the moment.

“Barcelona vs PSG? It is a match that everyone is looking forward to. Two great clubs, we have a lot of respect for Barça. They are a great club, but so are we,” he said via UEFA TV.

The most deserved UEFA Champions League final of last season was perhaps Barcelona vs PSG – a game that never happened because of the Catalans’ failure to hold on to a decisive lead with minutes to go in the semi-finals vs Inter Milan.

Nobody will know what would have happened had the final minutes at San Siro gone differently, but it is clear that the game would have been more competitive than the eventual finale.

Now, the world will get a chance to watch the two best teams on the planet face off, and it will be in Catalonia that the clash will take place. Needless to say, Hansi Flick and Co. will be determined to prove they are the better side.
