Paris Saint-Germain were stunned by a 1-0 defeat to Brazilian side Botafogo at the Club World Cup, putting their chances of making it through to the next round in serious doubt.
Despite dominating the ball at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, PSG couldn’t find a way past a determined Botafogo defence in what was the first-ever competitive clash between the two clubs.
The only goal of the match came in the 36th minute, when the 2024 Copa Libertadores winners won the ball in midfield and Jefferson Savarino threaded a lovely pass through for Igor Jesus, who coolly slotted it home.
Looking to get back into the game, Luis Enrique made several changes before the hour mark, bringing on Nuno Mendes, João Neves, Fabian Ruiz and Bradley Barcola to inject some energy.
PSG piled on the pressure in the closing stages, dominating the final half hour, but Botafogo defended heroically.
Barcola thought he’d grabbed a late equaliser in the 78th minute, but it was ruled out for offside, summing up a frustrating night for the French giants.
Although PSG put in a strong overall performance, they were undone by a gutsy and clinical Botafogo side.
Botafogo are now in a great position to reach the Last 16 and will face Atletico Madrid in their final group match, also in Pasadena, on Monday.
The last time a Champions League winner lost to South American opposition was back in 2012, when Corinthians beat Chelsea in the Club World Cup final.
PSG will need to bounce back quickly - they’ll have to beat already-eliminated MLS side Seattle Sounders in their last group game to avoid an embarrassing early exit.
