For a club that were newly promoted last season, Como have been among the biggest spenders in Italy this summer. In fact, they have been so active, that the fact that they almost lost manager Cesc Fabregas to Inter in June has almost been forgotten. They had a really impressive first season in the Serie A last time around, notching up a 10th place finish. Como’s summer transfer window reflects an ambitious strategy to blend experienced internationals with young, high-potential talents, signaling their intent to compete for bigger things this Serie A. The marquee signing is of Alvaro Morata, a proven goalscorer with extensive experience at top clubs, who adds some much needed experience to this young side. Young prospects like Jesús Rodríguez, Martin Baturina, and Jayden Addai bring dynamism in attack and provide Fabregas a range of options. Máximo Perrone and Nicolas Kühn, both acquired for substantial fees, add creativity and flair, while defensive reinforcements like Jacobo Ramon and Ignace Van der Brempt strengthen the backline. Importantly, they are mostly young players who can later be sold for profit. Inarguably, their biggest weakness is inexperience. The youngest side in Serie A, a lot will depend on their ability to react to situations when the tide is against them. Another key thing is that they have signed a number of new players, who might take some time to settle in, especially considering their age. Another unexpected issue that might still come up is if one of their important players leave at the fag end of the window. Reports in England have suggested that Spurs are interested in Nico Paz, although both Como and the player have been adamant publicly about being together. Given that last year they finished 10th and that they have spent a lot on transfers this summer, the goal is clear – European qualification. Champions League night be a step too far but Europa League or the Conference League are certainly attainable targets. Kaulik Mitra | GIFN
