Manchester United are reportedly on the cusp of welcoming their second summer signing – and it’s not a name fans expected heading into the window.

If the latest reports in Argentina are anything to go by, the Red Devils will be adding Emiliano Martinez to their ranks imminently.

Newspaper Clarin claims the shot-stopper has ‘everything ready’ to make the switch from Villa Park to Old Trafford after United learned of a £21.6 million release clause in his contract. However, INEOS are said to be considering paying a higher overall transfer fee in order to pay in instalments – as opposed to one upfront sum.

Such a move would presumably see the 32-year-old succeed Andre Onana following yet another lacklustre campaign between the sticks from the current No.1.

Onana is currently injured, although he’s only expected to miss the side’s pre-season tour and would return in time to see in the new season at home to Arsenal.

As for Martinez, he will miss the opening three matches of the term due to his calamitous display when lining up against United on the Premier League’s final day in May. He rushed off his line and clattered into the oncoming Rasmus Hojlund, subsequently receiving a red card before the Reds went on to seal a 2-0 victory.

Why Martinez?

Martinez is renowned for being one of the world’s best in his position, particularly in the aftermath of the 2022 World Cup, in which he played an integral role in Argentina getting their hands on the trophy for a third time.

While he may indeed strengthen Ruben Amorim’s leaky defensive contingent, it’s certainly a transfer that’s come out of the blue, given how desperate INEOS are to sanction Bryan Mbeumo’s arrival and a striker.
