A regular frustration for Newcastle United fans and supporters of other Premier League clubs, is how much notice is given of any rescheduling of matches.
What we are basically talking about are Premier League matches getting moved for live UK TV broadcast, certainly the overwhelming majority of changes are due to this.
After the release of the 2025/26 Premier League fixtures earlier today, the Premier League have followed up with a list of dates regarding when the rescheduling of PL matches for live TV broadcast for next season will be announced.
There is one big difference. In past years the Premier League have given a list of notification dates that they have said they are committed to sticking by, promising to give a certain amount of notice ahead of the next round of fixture moves. However, the reality was, that time after time the Premier League and the broadcasters would not stick the dates they had promised.
So now, the big difference for 2025/26 Premier League fixtures, is that the Premier League have given no commitment!
Instead in the official Premier League announcement (see below), the Premier League declare; ‘Below are the approximate dates for when the announcements on matches that have been selected for live TV broadcast will be made.’
Instead of committing fully to dates and a certain amount of notice (even though they often ignored that commitment without any explanation), the Premier League now say that they are ‘approximate’ dates when fans will be informed. A shame that when you are looking to go to a match and endlessly waiting to find out the confirm date, you can’t say to train companies, hotels and so on, these are the ‘approximate’ dates I want to travel or stay.
As well as the main announcement, the Premier League also stating this:
‘The Premier League understands the need to confirm fixture date and times as early as possible. Our fixture announcements will continue to provide around six weeks’ notice ahead of fixtures prior to January, and five weeks thereafter.’
Premier League official announcement – 18 June 2025:
‘Find out when the rescheduling of matches for live TV broadcast this season will be announced
Fixtures are amended throughout the season for several reasons, including live TV broadcast selections and to accommodate domestic and European cup competitions.
For this reason, Premier League fixtures are always advertised as being subject to change.
Below are the approximate dates for when the announcements on matches that have been selected for live TV broadcast will be made.
N.B. These dates are subject to change”
So then, ‘around’ 9 July 2025 we should be told which Premier League matches in August and September have been moved for TV. That follows on of course from the fact that the Premier League have already confirmed the TV matches in the first round of PL games, with Newcastle playing away at Villa at 12.30pm on Saturday 16 August, with TNT Sports having selected it for live coverage.
The Premier League have also given this warning about the later stages of the 2025/26 season, the impact they say if a significant number of English teams progress to the latter stages of the European competitions. Which could lead to far shorter notice given on certain PL fixture changes…
“While the Premier League celebrates this success, it will come with an impact on the scheduling of league matches.
“There is an increased likelihood of Premier League fixtures moving at relatively short notice, after our fixture announcements, should our clubs progress to the knockout rounds of these competitions.”
