Liverpool are considering Southampton prodigy Mateus Fernandes as a summer midfield target.
By now, Southampton fans are all too familiar with the club’s struggles this season. Notably, yesterday portrayed their season fate brilliantly, having arrived with some positives but a crucial setback rumour.
While the Saints fans must've celebrated the Premier League announcement, they would've blamed their fate on star prodigy Mateus Fernandes' transfer links.
Positively, still, having seen ex-hero Charly's case, it feels obvious that Southampton will not repeat the same mistake with Mateus this time.
But again, being in a vulnerable situation to go down this summer, managing the hold of such a talented gem feels difficult. After all, every Saints fan is aware of the ongoing Tyler Dibling transfer race.
Well, willingly, or unwillingly, that feels like the situation with Mateus Fernandes now. Interestingly, this time Premier League favourites Liverpool have entered the midfielder's race.
As per a recent Rousing the Kop report, the Reds have been urged to eye the 20-year-old for their midfield issues. A brilliant playmaker, and a talented youngster, Fernandes can be the next big name to cross the Southampton-Liverpool barrier.
On top of that, Adam Lallana's presence in the Southampton camp would make Liverpool smile ear to ear knowing their Mateus prospects. Sadly, this transfer isn't a win-win situation for Southampton on paper, if not for all parties involved.
Agreed, Southampton's financial aspect might get boosted with a Liverpool transfer, a Mateus departure would be a huge step back sportingly. More so, when the club is crying out for immediate attacking and defensive support.
In this scenario, Southampton must attempt their best to convince Mateus to trust in their long-term project. Apart from that, Mateus still holds the final say regarding where he wants to play next season and let's hope his eventual choice remains St. Mary's itself.
