The Australian is set to move to Fratton Park after just 12 months in the north east

Middlesbrough forward Sam Silvera is set to join Championship new boys Portsmouth FC on loan, according to a report from Guardian Sport reporter Will Unwin.

The Australian only joined Boro last summer, and featured in 37 league matches for Michael Carrick’s side, scoring four goals over the course of the campaign.

Silvera only managed to start 12 games for The Riverside outfit in the previous campaign, with the majority of his appearances coming from the bench, and a move to Fratton Park will likely see him feature more prominently in the upcoming campaign.

The deal to take the 2023 recruit to the current League One champions does not have an option for Pompey to make the deal permanent, with Boro expecting Silvera to return and make an impact at The Riverside, as per Northern Echo reporter Dom Shaw.

Middlesbrough midfielder Sam Silvera set for Portsmouth loan move

Silvera’s first season in England may not have gone the way he had imagined after making the move from Australia last summer, with a place in the Boro starting lineup proving hard to come by.

The forward did manage to find the net on his first start for the club, with a neat take in the 3-2 victory over Huddersfield Town in the EFL Cup getting his campaign up and running in August.

But from there, the Socceroos star had to make do with a bit-part role, although he did still manage to make his mark over the course of the season, with a late winner against Norwich City at Carrow Road one of the highlights.

Further match-winning strikes against Swansea City and Leicester City further prove just what a talent he is at the level, with John Mousinho seemingly wasting no time in getting the attacking outlet signed down for the upcoming campaign.

Boro have also been busy in the transfer window already this summer, with the arrival of Delano Burgzorg from FSV Mainz, as well as the impending transfer of Aidan Morris from Columbus Crew, with both players adding even more competition in the midfield and attacking roles.

Those bits of business will have left Silvera slipping down the pecking order even further in terms of first-team football next season, with the decision said to be made to send him out on loan for the next campaign.

Sam Silvera set to add to Portsmouth FC attacking ranks after Josh Murphy addition

Silvera will be in fine company upon his arrival at Fratton Park, with Pompey wasting no time in recruiting ahead of their return to the second tier.

Mousinho’s side won League One at a canter in the previous campaign, and have already bolstered their attacking options with the arrival of Josh Murphy [pictured] from fellow promoted side Oxford United.

The tricky winger was unplayable at times for the U’s in the previous campaign, with his match-winning brace securing a 2-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the Wembley playoff final to secure his side’s promotion.

The south coast side have also added Jordan Williams to their ranks this summer, with the defender joining from Barnsley, while goalkeeper Jordan Archer makes the move from Fratton Park after his release from Queens Park Rangers.
