The match began in predictable fashion: Monchengladbach came out of the gates cracking, ready to take the match to Dortmund, but as the Black and Yellows fended off the early attack, momentum began shifting to BVB, until Ko Itakura netted the opener for the Foals. BVB then began struggling, and the problems were compounded when Maxi Beier was forced off after an awkward challenge.
Carney Chukwuemeka replaced Beier, and the young Englishman brought some much-needed energy to the pitch. Somehow, BVB created a flurry of late first-half goals through Serhou Guirassy, Felix Nmecha, and Daniel Svensson, each goal coming between minute 40, and halftime.
The second half was a nail-biter, especially after the Foals pulled one back through a PK conceded by Felix Nmecha. Yet, the Black and Yellow maturely saw out the match, maintaining their lead and earning maximum points. This leaves BVB 4-points shy of UCL qualification, 3-points from Europa, and 2-points from the Conference League, with just four remaining matches.
At this point, every match should be seen as a final should BVB hope to play in Europe next season. This is good momentum ahead of next week’s clash against Hoffenheim. Until then, here are our player ratings:
