Lazio will return to Rome empty-handed after suffering a 0-2 defeat to Como on the opening matchday of the Serie A campaign.
Cesc Fabregas outplayed his former Chelsea boss, Maurizio Sarri, from start to finish, while Nico Paz stole the limelight, first by setting up Anastasios Douvikas for the opener, and then producing a stunning freekick to seal the win.
So here are our player ratings for the Biancocelesti players who were vastly disappointing in their first showing, as they miserably failed to ease the fears of the Lazio fans following this most unusual of summers.
Ivan Provedel – 6
The Italian custodian did well to deny Mergim Vojvoda’s attempt in the first half. He almost managed to stop the opener by putting his leg to the ball, but the power took it beyond him. Was left with no chance on the second goal.
Manuel Lazzari – 5.5
The former SPAL star is one of three uninspiring choices vying for the right-back slot. After an unconvincing showing at both ends of the pitch, Sarri will likely try Marusic next time.
Mario Gila – 6
The Spaniard produced some important interventions in the first half, but wasn’t able to stop Douvikas on the opener. Picked up Castellanos with a sublime long ball, but was denied an assist by a slight offside position.
Oliver Provstgaard – 5.5
On his full Serie A debut, the Dane didn’t embarrass himself, but he could have tried harder to block Paz’s through ball before it reached Douvikas.
Nuno Tavares – 5
The Portuguese left-back had some positive flashes in the first half and looked reliable at the back, but lost the plot after the break. Allowed Paz to easily dance around him on the opening goal.
Como 2-0 Lazio: Nico Paz Tortures Bewildered Aquile
Matteo Guendouzi – 5.5
The Frenchman worked hard in the middle of the park, but lacked quality in both phases of the game.
Danilo Cataldi – 4.5
The returning Lazio midfielder was given a golden opportunity as Rovella was kept on the bench following the birth of his daughter on Saturday. However, Cataldi failed to make up for his teammate’s absence, as the midfield looked in disarray.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru – 6
An encouraging display from the Nigerian who did well to retrieve the ball on several occasions, but much more is expected of him while in possession.
Matteo Cancellieri – 5
Like Cataldi, the Italian winger squandered a golden chance to challenge Gustav Isaksen for a permanent starting role. He was often stopped in his tracks rather easily.
Taty Castellanos – 6
The Argentinian was deprived of any sort of service, but showcased his clinical touch with the solitary chance that came his way. His excellent control was followed by a cool finish, but it was later denied by VAR.
Mattia Zaccagni – 5
The Lazio players turned to their captain for inspiration, but they hardly found any. The winger was often crowded by Como players and was never given time and space to work his magic.
Substitutes: Adam Marusic (5.5), Pedro (5.5), Nicolo Rovella (6), Luca Pellegrini (5.5), Boulaye Dia (N/A)
