Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has admitted that he has proven a prediction made at the start of the year to be correct, speaking during a new interview.

Foden has been nothing short of sensational for Manchester City across all competitions, recording his most productive season to date in front of goal and by quite some distance too, with crucial moments in the Premier League in particular.

In the English top-flight alone, Foden has established himself as one of the finest players in front of goal, netting on 17 occasions and providing a further eight assists for his Manchester City teammates.

It has been those performances that have been recognised by one of the nation’s leading awards, voted for by writers within the English game from across the country, whilst Foden is also expected to be a serious candidate for the Premier League’s Player of the Season prize.

The England international has recently been crowned Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year following his outstanding performances throughout the 2023/24 campaign domestically, and Foden has admitted that he has proven his own prediction correct.

“I said at the start of the year I wanted to try to be one of the best players in our league,” the Manchester City academy product admitted. “I think this season my game has come on loads, and I’ve performed really well.

“I’ve moved more centrally, where I see myself in the future. I’m just playing with freedom and playing with a smile on my face. Being an attacking player at City, you want that responsibility to try and score goals and assist my teammates.”

Foden continued, I think playing higher up, that’s what the aim is to do. I put that pressure on myself and I like that pressure. I’m delighted to be amongst so many special players that have won the award before.”

Foden and his Manchester City players still have work to do this season, with two finals in successive weekends on the horizon, as they take on West Ham at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, knowing that a win would crown them Premier League champions.

The following Saturday afternoon will see Pep Guardiola and his squad travel to Wembley Stadium for the showpiece FA Cup final, in a repeat of last season’s finale against Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.
