Perfect reminder of such short memories for certain Newcastle United fans

I know we are all guilty of this as Newcastle United fans.

Such short memories at times.

In its most extreme form, a small number of Newcastle United fans even seem incapable of acknowledging what happened, good or bad, in the first half of a match.

Which can mean a seriously lopsided belief for some of what we have all just watched, where all the focus is on what happened after the break, especially if something pivotal happens late in a match.

When it comes to ‘longer-term’ short memories though, we now have this classic reminder.

The final stages of last season saw Tino Livramento switched over to the left side of the pitch.

An injury to Lewis Hall meant the former Southampton defender filling in at left-back.

Tino Livramento even playing in that position at Wembley, as United won the League Cup. A cross from the left seeing Tino set up Jacob Murphy to head the ball down for Isak’s winning goal.

Kieran Trippier on the right, Tino Livramento on the left, this combination continuing in Lewis Hall’s absence as Newcastle United qualified for the Champions League.

Quite rightly, a lot of praise coming the way of Tino, how well he had adapted.

This has continued into the summer internationals, with so few qualifying left-backs, Thomas Tuchel choosing to send Tino Livramento to the Under 21 Euro Finals, as one of the leaders of the group and to be first choice at…left-back, as the Young Lions attempt to retain the U21s Euro title they won in 2023.

With Tino Livramento having been one of the best performers in the group matches, at left-back, the Newcastle United star asked before tonight’s England U21 quarter-final against Spain, whether he has now had found his best position…

“I wouldn’t say playing as a left-back is my favourite position…

“But so long as I am out there and playing, I am really enjoying my football right now.”

There you have the reality.

Tino Livramento giving the typical footballer’s response of ‘so long as I am on the pitch’ I am happy to play wherever the manager asks me to (which often sees an outfield player saying he would even be happy to play in goal etc etc so long as in the team).

However, at the same time, the NUFC star also making clear that he is not a left-back.

Left-back is not his ‘favourite’ position.

Which brings me back to Lewis Hall.

I have found it laughable how pretty much all outsiders are choosing to ignore the fact of how outstanding Lewis Hall was this past season for Newcastle United. He was totally ignored when it came to nominations for best young Premier League players etc, whilst Miles Lewis-Skelly who only started 15 PL matches all season was nominated.

Though not so laughable that some Newcastle fans with such short memories are also failing to forget how brilliant the lifelong NUFC supporter was during the 2024/25 season. These Newcastle supporters talking of Tino as a first choice left-back next season.

Before his injury at the end of February 2025, Lewis Hall had played in all 27 of Newcastle’s Premier League matches, starting 24 of them.

Hall had also played in all the six League Cup games, starting all of them apart from coming on as a sub against AFC Wimbledon.

Lewis Hall starting in the League Cup wins over Forest, Chelsea, Brentford and Arsenal (twice!).

I love Tino Livramento, think he is a quality player, but I think Lewis Hall is even better!

Until his injury at the end of February 2025, the consensus amongst Newcastle United fans was that the NUFC player of the year was between Lewis Hall, Sandro Tonali and Alexander Isak.

Yet for some, because he missed the cup final and the last 11 Premier League matches of the season, Lewis Hall is all but forgotten about by some.

The simple fact is that Tino Livramento is now the very best right-back at Newcastle United AND Lewis Hall is the very best left-back. It is a massive bonus that Tino can also fill in at left-back, just as Kieran Trippier could (still can!).

What happens in the very recent past shouldn’t make us forget about what happened before then.

Eddie Howe has ensured that Newcastle United now have a great group of talented young players, as well as the more mature to provide a great balance.
