Liverpool dispelled any doubts around them by equalling the Premier League record for biggest win against Bournemouth at Anfield.
This is what we made of it.
Some dared to use the ‘c’ word regarding the Reds following a winless start after three games to the league season.
Jürgen Klopp claimed that after holding ‘clear-the-air’ talks with his squad following defeat at Old Trafford, everyone felt much better for it. Oh how that showed on Saturday afternoon.
This was Liverpool at their best: relentlessly pressuring opponents, pouring forward in numbers and giving the opposition no space or time to rest, relax or pass.
It started from the front and carried through to the defence, who admittedly had little to do aside from getting among the goals, Trent Alexander-Arnold notching a wonder goal and Virgil van Dijk thumping home an emphatic header too.
They have been among the players most criticised for their form to start the season but all of that was forgotten on one of the most memorable days on Merseyside in recent memory.
There is a long way still to go and the Reds are still only eighth after four games but this is precisely the kind of statement performance that will have everyone else worried again.
We’ve seen enough. They’re back.
Unsurprisingly when you hit nine without reply, you are going to enter the history books. Let’s take a look at some of the stats set in victory …
It is Liverpool’s join biggest top-flight win ever, equalling their 9-0 success against Crystal Palace in September 1989 and 10-1 win over Rotherham 126 years ago.
They join Manchester United (twice) and Leicester in being the only sides in the Premier League era to register 9-0 victories.
The first half record of five goals from five different players was the first time in club history they ever achieved that feat in a competitive fixture – previously only doing so in non-league against Higher Walton in 1892.
As if all of that wasn’t enough, there was even time during the second half (and you may have missed it amid the madness) for Klopp to hand league debuts to Bobby Clark and Stefan Bajcetic.
At 17 years and 309 days, the Spaniard became the club’s youngest ever non-British league debutant, per Opta.
If the above was all Klopp contributed by way of a team talk before this one, we wouldn’t be surprised. It was all they had to do for this one.
By half-time, Roberto Firmino had directly contributed to four of the five goals with a hat-trick of assists and a goal of his own.
He became the first Liverpool player to achieve that feat in the first half of a Premier League game and is the first for any team in the division to do so since Harry Kane five years ago.
The Brazilian added a second goal to take his tally for the club to 100 and in doing so, follows Gabriel Jesus as the only player in the English top flight to be involved in five goals in a single game in 2022.
With that strike, he also helped his manager make an impressive piece of history too.
According to Opta, he joins Salah (159) and Sadio Mané in reaching treble figures for Klopp, who becomes the first manager in club history to have three different players reach that landmark in his tenure.
